If you are a dog owner, you have experienced the joy and pain of having to stay indoors with your dog for multiple days. While there can be a variety of reasons for staying indoors with your dog from freezing cold days to a virus locking you down, we all wonder what we can do to avoid getting stir crazy. In this blog we will be giving you a few helpful suggestions to help navigate this part of dog ownership!
1.Teach Your Dog New Tricks
One of the greatest things you can do while staying indoors is keeping your dog’s mind busy. Teaching your dog a couple of new tricks can be a great way of bonding and having fun. You might consider teaching your dog how to shake, high five, or even how to balance a treat on their nose! The possibilities of what your dog can learn are endless. You’d be surprised what your dog can learn in a couple of hours of training.
2. Play Hide and Seek
If you search “ Hide and Seek with a Dog” on Youtube you will not be sorry. Some of the funniest dog videos on the internet are dogs trying to find their owners inside of their own home. This is a great way of getting your dog's physical and mental energy out. This game is best done with two people, while one of you holds the dog in place and the other hides. Once your dog finds you reward them with some goodies!
3. Use Long Lasting Treats
There are a lot of great treats out there to keep your dog entertained for longer periods of time. Some of these may include deer antlers, raw beef marrow bones, or Kong’s Classic fillable toy. Whatever your dog seems to enjoy we would encourage you to use in moderation as excessive chewing can be bad.
4. Dog Spa Day
Being inside can be a great time to get your grooming on with your dog. Especially as we near spring/summer, a lot of dogs will need to shed their winter coats. Giving your dog a nice deep clean can be a great way to spend time with your best friend. We would recommend starting by brushing your dog out followed with a proper ear cleaning using dog ear cleaning solution. After that, you can then proceed to give your dog a bath. Following these simple steps will ensure a nice proper cleaning!
5.Get Your Dog Active
There are plenty of great ways to keep your dog active while indoors. One fun idea is to create a doggy obstacle course. You can even use treats to make it more fun! If you have access to a treadmill, that is also a great way to get your dog some needed exercise. There are plenty of great videos on Youtube to help you get started. We have linked one of our favorites. Don’t be afraid to get creative with how you get your dog active inside!
We hope these helpful tips will help you have a ton of fun when you are stuck indoors with your dog. If you have any other ideas, we would love to hear down below in the comments!
